5 Must See Places in Bavaria, Germany

Happy 2022!! I hope you all had a great New Years and am hoping that this year is a great one for you. Let’s start the new year off by talking about one of my favorite places, Bavaria, Germany. This has been one of the best places I have been so far on my travels. You have everything from a big city to tiny Medieval towns, to the mountains. There is so much to do and see in this German state. Here are the 5 places you need to see when you are there:

1.     Lake Eibsee

Located at the very edge of Germany is Lake Eibsee. This is such a beautiful lake that sits in the valley of the tallest mountains in Germany. Also provides a great reflection of the mountains around it as well. Here you will find great hiking trails and ski slopes. You are able to access the highest point in Germany by a cable car that takes you to an observation station at the top of the mountain. From there you can see for miles in all directions and even into Austria.

2.     Rothenburg ob Der Tauber

This is a small, well preserved Medieval town on the edge of Bavaria. The town in still surrounded by the original city walls and the buildings are all well taken care of. St. Jakob’s Cathedral is a wonder to walk into and it has a magnificent altarpiece if you are into art. This town is quiet and easy to walk around in and looks over a small village in the valley below the city walls.

3.     Munich

The capital of Bavaria. This city was established in 1158 and many of the historic buildings you see there were built in the 1400’s. The Marienplatz is filled with shops and good bakeries, and around the corner is the outdoor market where you can find all kinds of great German food and fresh produce. There is a lot to explore in this city and enough for everyone to do and tailor to your interests; art, history, food, etc.

4.     Neuschwanstein Castle

The reason most people go to Bavaria is the Neuschwanstein Castle and rightfully so. It is a magnificent castle that stands alone on a mountain, towering over the small town below. There are a few trails around the castle that you can explore as well. In addition to the castle, there is also a lake and the Hohenschwangau Castle. This is a interesting area to explore because you go for the castle and are surprised by the rest of the surroundings as well.

5.     Nationalpark Berchtesgaden

This national park in the corner of Germany is a good one to visit if you have time. Surrounded by mountains there is lake Königsee and some great hiking trails. You can take ferry tours of the lake which snakes back deep into the mountains and is really beautiful.
